Q#19 Can you help us fill these balls? Winners Announced

Every fortnight, Open Door asks an interesting Science/Math question to 2000+ school owners and principals.
School leaders look forward to this initiative because it adds a flavour of thinking in their regular schedule of managing the school. We call this initiative as 'Making Thinking Leaders Think'.

For MTLT#19 we asked you this question,

Look at the triangles in the video

Which among the two triangles can accommodate more numbers of these balls?

(A) Triangle DEF (left side)

(B) Triangle ABC (right side)

(C) Both the triangles will accommodate same number of balls

Correct Answer and Explanation:

At the onset of the video we can see that the stick that makes the base of Triangle DEF has the same length as that of the base of Triangle ABC. These bases can be seen lying on the same straight line which is parallel to the upper edge of the table. This upper edge holds vertex F and vertex A of the triangles.  

So, that makes the perpendicular distances (altitudes) from these vertices to their respective bases thesame.

As we know, Area of triangle = 1/2(base x height)

Hence, Area of Triangle ABC = Triangle DEF

The balls that we are accommodating inside these triangles will take up approximately the same area as that of the area of these triangles. So, the triangles shown will hold the same number of balls.
